Stress Management Training and How it Can Help

Stress is normal in your life but if you ever notice that you are starting to have so much stress that it is getting out of control and you don’t know what to do, then you should know that you are going to have to get a stress management tip or even stress management training. The purpose of stress management training is to help you learn how to figure out what the causes of stress are in your life and also determine the best way to deal with your stress.

How to Cope With Stress

There are a few different things that are important to learn about when it comes to stress management training. Of course the first thing that anyone dealing with stress has to do is figure out what the cause of their stress is. In a lot of cases, if you can find out what the cause of your stress is, you can remove the cause from your life and deal with the stress right from the root of it all.

For instance if you find that you are working a lot and this is causing you stress, then even just taking a weekend off every now and then can be the solution here. If you do this and find that you are relieved of your stress, then you don’t have to worry about doing anything further. However, unfortunately for the majority of people there is much more to it than that.

A lot of us get so swamped up in life with all that we have to do, that we feel as though stress is coming at us in every possible way. Kids, our job, personal life including relationships, there are so many different things that we have to worry about.

When it comes to stress management training, you need to know one thing is to just relax and breathe. This is the most important thing for stress management training because when you are feeling stress take over and you may even feel as though you are going to have a panic attack, you need to make sure that you slow your breathing and concentrate on your breathing so that you can calm yourself down.

If you find that your stress is out of control and these techniques are just not working enough for you, then you may want to talk to a therapist or counselor who is going to be able to talk with you and help you out here.

Technique Ideas

There are actually quite a few different stress management technique ideas that you could use, and a few stress management technique ideas that are usually really effective and which you are going to want to try. One of the best techniques is to breathe. You may think that this is too simple that it would not be enough to do anything, but that is actually not the case.

For this stress management technique you are going to want to just start to breathe in and out slowly whenever you start to feel that stress coming on and taking over. You really want to think about your breathing and focus only on that. Even if you are at work and have to leave the room so that you can be alone and think to yourself to stop the stress before you are going to become overcome by your stress.

This is definitely one of the easiest and best techniques for managing your stress that you could try, but there are a lot of others as well.

For instance there is this stress management technique that you can try, which is to talk to someone. This is of course the exact opposite of leaving a room and breathing slowly, but one that is also very effective. It really all depends on who you are and how you react to your stress in terms of which of these techniques is going to be best for you.

Dealing with stress is not something that is ever easy, but at least with the right techniques you know that you are going to be able to deal with it effectively and at least manage it and keep it under control so that you are not going to lose it. Try to prevent stress from happening in the future so that you can live a calm life and one that is happy and you can’t live a great life if you have too much stress.

A question many have been asking lately is if stress can cause memory loss. The body reacts to deal with stress in many situations. Cortisol is a horomone that is released by the brain and it provides energy to your body to take action in our limbs and throughout our body.

Your stress has to be prevented. You can read about how to prevent memory loss from stress.

Since the hippocampus is robbed of its energy in such conditions, there are high possibilities of creating new memories at this point of time. If the hippocampus is exposed in such a way for a long time, then there are chances of short-term memory loss. The functions of the brain are deterred and loss of memory occurs in such times. Repeated exposure of the hippocampus damages it, and this is one of the earliest causes of Alzheimer’s at a later stage.

Because of all this stress can cause memory loss. Your body and brain should not be subjected to long periods of stress and it is important to control your stress levels. Stress effects the brain cells negatively and memory loss happens in the long run. It is important to keep the body free from as much stress as possible. Sometimes you can recover memories that were lost by continuous stress or brain damage but it is very difficult. If the brain was subjected to too much stress however your memories may be lost forever. Try to control your stress levels to prevent this from happening.

If you keep your stress under control then you are less likely to lose your memory.

Life’s upsets have invariably been a element in stress management and being able to manage with the strain that comes with adjustments that are often forces upon us. Life changes, in whatever form, can be dealth with in 1 of 2 ways – either it is received or it is not. Individuals are ever fearful of change that happens in their life-time and perhaps that is why some people grow to be stressed by it. Maybe it is the unforeseen that can stress Individuals out whenever change occurs in their lives and why there are so many unusual ways that Individuals react to change when it occurs.

The most popular response to change is shock and surprise, so when confronted by unanticipated circumstances such as unwanted incidents or other unplanned events, surprise appears to be the instant reaction for many. Such states of affairs make people realise that certain plans they have considered in life can oftentimes have some unexpected effects. The realisation that very little is eternal can be a beginning of stress for some people as change may come as a complete shock. Many individuals react to change with denial and decline to acknowledge it.

Often people will try to bring out certain values ready to reinforce that change is not a necessity but this may be a secondary reaction after the surprise and shock stage. From time to time, people move from surprise, and sometimes denial, to a logical apprehension of change and might see that change is actually needed in certain situations as there are grounds why it occurs.

Through this, people begin to learn how to find means on how to manage with the problem. Yet, at this point Individuals may still not be willing to have change affect their behavior but preferably find some means to repair the situation instead. Change can sometimes lead people to respond in two assorted ways. At a certain point, the situation may reach a level where it becomes a crisis and when this place is reached, Individuals may either swallow it or avoid it completely.

When Individuals discover to swallow change, irrespective how painful, they are no longer affected by the stress that occurs with it as much as those that may wish to avoid or ignore it. Fending off evident changes, especially the embarrassing ones, can sometimes lead to additional stress in many people. Trying to fight one’s own way in handling change instead of admitting it can sometimes be a lost cause and struggles, both internal and external, may arise causing considerable stress to many people.

It is only after discovering how to admit change that the tension caused by the burden of denial and refusal to admit it, it will be released. Stress management works by being capable to comprehend and learn about how People deal with changes. Knowing the assorted reactions and the phases that people go through with change can help people get a better appreciation of dealing with the results of change with less stress.

If you suffered from ongoing stress and anxiety what would you look for as a solution? Would you look for drugs or would you look for a more natural stress relief alternative? It might surprise you that natural remedies are becoming more and more popular.

These remedies are well-known throughout the world because they’ve been around for a long, long time. Their ingredients are organic so they usually have few or no side-effects. Also, they’re non-addictive, one big advantage over drugs. But there’s another.

Herbal supplements work with your body to maintain its chemical balance while drugs change that chemical balance in order to hide your symptoms. Drugs do nothing to strengthen your nervous system, but herbal remedies do. And when your body is stronger and functioning more properly, you’re able to cope with your stress and anxiety much better.

Herbal remedies are much easier on your body than prescription drugs. Their effects are cumulative not abrupt. This means it will take longer for you to see their effects but those effects will also be longer lasting. That’s a small price to pay for a supplement that’s non-addictive.

The usefulness of herbal remedies isn’t just theory either. There have been many studies done on the effectiveness of different botanical products and herbs in the treatment of many ailments, not just anxiety or stress. Laboratories across the world have proven that natural herbal remedies do work.

In particular, herbs like Valerian and Lemon Balm have been proven to have strong anti-anxiety, calming properties. Passion Flower and Kava are known for their sedative effects. And there are several more, used by themselves or in conjunction with others that produce very positive effects on your mood.

You can find nearly all of these supplements fairly easily at your health food store. And you’ll also find that they come in different varieties and formulations. Take Valerian for instance. You can usually find it sold as a tea, a tincture, or even in capsule form. There’s a lot of variety to choose from.

So if you think your body needs a little bit of help coping with the daily stress and anxiety you experience, natural stress relief remedies are a good way to go. There’s a wide variety to choose from, they’re easy to find, and they’re non-addictive. They’re a great alternative to drugs.

We live in stressful times and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Combating stress is a skill that we can learn in order to maximize quality of life. One of the most effective ways to do this is through cognitive redirection and focusing on positives rather than negatives. Acknowledging good fortune in our lives and not allowing problems and setbacks to dominate our outlook is an important and simple way to deal with stress.

Many times it’s just easier to be ungrateful about the things we do not have instead of being grateful for the positive things we have been dealt or what we have achieved. These positive parts of our lives are often overlooked and taken for granted until some sort of disaster hits. All too often we can forget about having a roof over our heads, a warm bed and even a hot shower. Once we can identify those things for which we have to be grateful for, we have the perfect exercise for positive thinking, and it could actually change our feelings towards stress as well as balancing out the related effects.

The factors causing stress are many, but it is defined as a state where an individual is not in equilibrium with their individual surroundings. It is known to us now that the distinction between both body and mind is of limited usefulness. Negative thoughts are able to have an affect on the body, just as trauma can affect the mind. Experiences of stress prompting negative emotions may have a direct affect when it comes to body chemistry. In response to any threat or stress, our bodies produce hormones and other chemicals, such as adrenalin and cortisol.

We are fortunate enough to have the opposite apply as well. Any calm environment and/or positive thoughts are able to combat both the physical and mental effects of stress. Taking a little time out of every day to concentrate on the positive – even a small period of time as little as five minutes – you can easily separate yourself from stressors and their effects.

The need to recognize those bursts of good fortune can have a radical effect on our perspective. Problems have a tendency to cast a dark cloud so to speak over the parts of our lives that are going well and distorting our perspective on things. Let’s take for example that sense of panic we feel when tasks are uncompleted instead of giving ourselves some praise over what we did accomplish. When the period of stress is prolonged or extended, it is entirely possible for us to develop unhealthy patterns of jumping automatically to a negative conclusion. By focusing on those things that make us happy is a very powerful technique we can use to overcome that pattern of thinking negatively, thereby reducing stress as well as giving a boost to the immune system.

It may initially be difficult to identify those particular things you have to be grateful for, especially if you are already stressed, tense and can’t see the forest for the trees. Take time to practice, and start with easy things such as a sunny day, or a new rose on your bushes. You will more than likely rely on hindsight to start, but with time and a little effort you will notice it becoming easier.

While training yourself to recognize the many reasons you have to be grateful, the amount of time you spend taking things for granted will lessen dramatically. Seeing that flower blooming will trigger the recognition for seeing the reasons for celebration. As this appreciation integrates into your daily routine and functionality you can, and will discover how this process will reinforce positive thinking as well as your capacity to deal with stress.

Changes to our life have incessantly been a component in managing stress and being fit to deal with the strain that comes with change. Life adjustments, in any form, can be dealth with in one of two ways – either it is received or it is unwelcome. Individuals are ever fearful of change that occurs in their life-time and perchance that is why some people grow to be nervous by it. Possibly it is the unpredicted that can stress Individuals out whenever change occurs in their life-time and why there are so many different ways that people react to change when it happens.

The most frequent response to change is shock and surprise, so when presented by unpredicted situations such as unwanted incidents or other unplanned events, surprise appears to be the first reaction for many. Such states of affairs make people realize that particular plans they have made in life can often have some unexpected effects. The realization that nothing is enduring can be a source of stress for some people as change may come as a complete surprise. Some people respond to change with denial and decline to accept it.

Then again, some Individuals will attempt to bring out particular values in order to support that change is not needed but this may be a secondary reaction after the surprise and shock stage. At times, people move from surprise, and often denial, to a logical understanding of change and may observe that change is in reality needed in particular situations because there are reasons why it goes on. Through this, people begin to see how to find ways on how to manage with the situation. Still, at this point Individuals may still not be willing to have change affect their behavior but rather find some ways to amend the situation instead. Change can sometimes lead Individuals to react in two assorted ways. At a particular point, the state of affairs may get to a level where it becomes a crisis and when this place is reached, Individuals may either accept it or avoid it altogether.

When people discover to accept change, regardless how harsh, they are no longer impacted by the stress that comes with it as much as those that may wish to avoid or ignore it. Heading off plain changes, particularly the painful ones, can sometimes lead to extra stress in many Individuals. Trying to fight one’s personal way in dealing with change instead of admitting it can sometimes be a lost cause and conflicts, both internal and external, may arise inducing considerable tension to many individuals.

It is only after learning how to admit change that the stress caused by the burden of self-denial and refusal to admit it, it will be released. Stress management functions by being competent to understand and discover about how People deal with changes. Being conscious the assorted reactions and the phases that Individuals go through with change can assist people get a better appreciation of managing with the results of change with less stress.

There is no one who finds their teenage years a stress free or easy time. Adolescent stress is common and can be linked to any number of different factors. There are the hormonal shifts which mark puberty, learning to deal with their developing minds, bodies and emotions and the pressure associated with realizing that they are growing up and starting to make choices about their lives. All of these things can cause an adolescent stress and anxiety.

All of the following situations or events are stressful for adolescents:

- parents separating

- moving

- starting at a new school

- death in the family

- conflicts with their teachers, their parents or their classmates

- starting or ending their early romantic and/or sexual relationships

- having sex for the first time

- family problems, including an illness in the family

- their family experiencing financial problems

- living in a neighborhood which is dangerous

- the physical changes to their bodies which accompany puberty

- being pressured to succeed atcademically (by teachers, parents, peers or themselves)

- low self esteem and a poor self image

Of course, all of these things could cause stress in adults too. Adolescents, however have less control over their lives and tend to cope with stress differently than do adults.

Every teenager experiences stress. They may show this by:

- irritability and mood swings

- anxiety, worrying

- withdrawal, avoiding other people

- drug or alcohol use

- physical illness

There are methods which adolescents can use to control stress. So0me give teens near-immediate relief from stress but others are a long term strategy to achieve stable hormonal levels and emotional balance.

- watching or reading something humorous

- listen to music which relaxes you

- talking with close friends and playing with pets

- get regular exercise

- eat healthily, including a variety of vegetables in your diet

- avoid stimulants and other chemicals (coffee, tea, cola, chocolate, sugar, tobacco, alcohol and drugs), especially when experiencing stress

- learning relaxation techniques, including deep breathing

- practice yoga, tai chi or meditation

- learning to communicate with others in a way which is assertive but not threatening. This involves learning to clearly communicate how you feel or what you want

- if you do not know where to start with a task, break it down into smaller parts and do them one by one

- stop negative thinking in its tracks and replace it with positive affirmations

- do not indulge in imagining all the bad things that might happen

If you’re experiencing a lot of stress and you are finding your quality of life or even your physical health negatively affected, you may benefit from stress management training. This training will teach you some of the techniques listed above and help you learn to reduce stress almost as soon as it arises.

Keep in mind that a certain degree of stress is only natural and we all experience it at times. What matters is how you deal with stress ? adolescent stress does not have to overshadow everything else in your life.

Stress is part of everyone’s life and can cause problems with your health. Finance and money are frequently among the first of the stresses that most people feel. However, families and work are also a frequent cause of stress and tension. Use the following tips to ensure that you deal with your stress in a healthy way.

Examine the source of your stress.

See if you can make changes in the areas of your life where you are feeling stress.

Find ways to relax such as massage, deep breathing, meditation, or yoga.

Exercise or other physical activity will help you deal with stress

Practice time management. Put your tasks into a priority list. When you make your list take into account yourself, your family, and your job. Using a check list will give you satisfaction when you complete a task.

Avoid sugar, fats, tobacco, caffeine, and alcohol to help your body and mind to cope with stress.

It is important to get enough sleep.

Professional counselors and support groups will help if you have something bothering you. Your family and friends are also usually there to help you.

Volunteering can give you a sense of purpose and increase your self esteem and reduce your stress.

Take some personal time. This can include reading a book, watching a movie, listening to music, or any other personal time that you enjoy.

Practice anger management. If you feel that you have problems dealing with you anger find a support group that you can join.

Take a vacation, no matter how short a time you can afford to get away.

Don’t take on too much at one time. Learn to take it easy.

Remember that nobody is perfect.

Try not to judge others harshly.

Laugh whenever you can, even at yourself now and then.

Move your head from side to side and rotate you neck in a circle to reduce the tension in your neck and jaw.

Set small and smart goals for yourself and then work carefully and realistically towards achieving them. Keep in mind that unrealistic goals never seem to be reached and this can add to your stress level. Try to set just goal for yourself this week by using the SMART approach:

SPECIFIC: Choose one little goal and write it down.

MEASURABLE: How will you know when it is done?

ACHIEVABLE: Is it realistic? If not, make it smaller.

REWARDED: Reward yourself when you reach your goal.

TIME-LIMITED: In order to be a SMART goal it must have a realistic finish date and time.

The most effective stress reliever for your body is laughter. Learn to laugh or turn to funny movies or tv shows to provide some relief from stress. Be ready to use laughter for stress management.

Cope with stress by going for a walk. If the stress is at work, go for a walk at lunchtime. Walking will give you time to look at the situation that is causing you a problem. Any other exercise will also help with stress relief.

When dealing with stress and its related issues, it is important to realize that some forms of stress can actually be extremely harmful to the body. Since everyone suffers from stresses of some kind, this is a big deal for everyone. Too much stress can lead to serious health disorders. This makes overcoming stress one of the most important skills to have in the world today.

There are many different levels of stress and some are minor, while others can pose serious health risks. Stress can actually lead to many other problems, such as eating disorders, sleep disorders, ulcers, depression, cardiovascular and digestive problems, as well as mental issues. Stress preys on the mind, prompting the sufferer to constantly worry about the pressures that they are under. This can be quite a harmful cycle because they never get a chance to relax or let go of the issues that they are facing. Most people face stressful circumstances throughout a good portion of their lives. Pressures about employment, money, family and many other things can cause stress in a person’s life. If not dealt with in a timely manner, it can build up to such a level that it causes serious health problems in a person’s life. Yet nearly anything can cause stresses. What causes stress for some might not cause any stress for someone else. The important thing is how you deal with it.

Stress can be treated in different ways. While the initial treatment is to learn stress management skills, in many cases it is not enough to see a noticeable change in stress levels. Many health experts believe that high levels can lead to other issues, such as depression and anxiety disorders. Antidepressants are sometimes prescribed for stress and its related cousins. If you suspect that someone you know is suffering from too much stress, or you feel that you are under too much stress, then it might be a good idea to read wellness guides to properly diagnose what you or your loved ones might be going through. The best way to live a stress free life is to learn to let things go. Of course, this can often be extremely hard to do, which is why stress management is a very popular form of therapy. If a stress problem is suspected, then be sure to contact a health professional for an expert diagnosis.

Stress and its related disorders can lead to serious health risks, so it is very important not to ignore the signs. One of the most common treatments is overcoming stress courses, or antidepressants. Since this is a problem that strikes everyone at some point or other, it is important not to overlook the importance of treatments if levels become too high. A health expert can coach someone on the best way to deal with stress.

Those who suffer from panic disorders are most often terrified about the possibility of triggering their next panic attack. This is a mental disease that many people associate with depression and poor stress management. Fortunately, there are plenty of warning signs before the onset of any attack, and your ability to single out these signs should enable you to prevent the onset of one.

The most important remedy while fighting against a panic disorder is to take action. Do not wait for it to wash over you; do not wait to pit your strength against it and measure your will power against the storm that is created by an anxiety panic attack. The best way to stop panic attacks is to prevent them. Traumatic as it is, a few simple steps at the onset of an attack can help you tremendously. Most experts would say that you should not brace yourself against it, but rather roll with the wave. In this way, the attack will come and go, and you will not feel devastated the next day.

Life can look totally different if you look at it from two different angles. People who are affected by panic disorders tend to think that they have no worth. This in turn points to the possibility of moving toward a major attack, unless you are able to prevent it in time. Be on the look out for depression and anxiety tell-tale signs.

Panic disorders are the result of a mental disease, and can turn regular, day-to-day problems into mammoth fears and anxiety attacks if left untreated. These attacks are tremendously traumatic since they are disproportionate to reality and therefore, it becomes difficult for you to defend yourself against it. Health experts advise that the only things that can control such attacks are strong will power, appropriate medicines and timely action. All these initiatives should be applied at the same time in the correct order and intensity to provide you with relief.

Millions of people deal with panic disorders each day of their lives. They are locked in a vicious cycle of needing help but not knowing how to get it. If you suffer from these conditions it can make each moment seem like forever. It changes who you are and what you wish to be. But do not give up hope. There is a bright future ahead for you if you take the time to know your condition and ailment. It may seem impossible at times but you can get through this.

Many people all over the world suffer from anxiety disorders and these disorders often cause panic attacks. If you are one of those people, then you know anxiety panic attacks can cause a rush of different emotions; each one more overwhelming than the last. To properly deter an anxiety panic attack you have to first know what they are and what causes them. This article is going to explain what these attacks consist of and how to deal with them when they occur.

An anxiety attack is a symptom of different anxiety disorders. If you suffer from them, then it’s important to understand what they are. An attack is when a person’s anxiety and stress levels balloon to a point where they cannot control it. They quickly begin to fear their surroundings, fear they are dying, having a heart attack, or are going crazy. It is a cognitive episode where your mind will tell your body it is experiencing discomfort that likely doesn’t exist and can last from one minute to fifteen minutes. Often an attack will cause a person to live in fear of the next attack, which only worsens the stress.

Keeping a cool head during an anxiety panic attack is hard to do, especially when you suffer from an anxiety disorder. However, if this is something you have to deal with for the rest of your life it’s important to learn stress management. Anxiety panic attacks come on fast so the best thing to do in most cases is to calm down and then lay down. Once you do this you can try and calm your mind by stating that it will pass and telling yourself that the pain you are feeling isn’t real. You can try and prevent panic attacks by learning what triggers them. Do they happen in certain situations or do negative thoughts bring them on?

You can take the controlling techniques to a higher level in order to get rid of your anxiety panic attacks. You can start out by teaching yourself relaxation practices. You’ll want to choose something that’s appropriate for you. Some of the more popular choices are listening to relaxing music, reading and practicing yoga. Once you learn what an anxiety panic attack is and what to do to control them your life should be on the road to recovery. Anxiety disorders can make life complicated but with a clear head and a lot of determination you should be able to handle whatever they throw your way!

Suffering from anxiety changes your life. Whereas once you were able to go out and have fun without any trouble, suddenly a routine trip to the grocery store seems insurmountable. You panic at the thought of leaving your home or speaking to others. It is a debilitating condition but there is help and there is hope for a better quality of life. It takes courage to be able to admit that you have a problem and it takes even more to seek out help. It is help that you desperately need. You can end your anxiety yourself. Click here to get rid of your panic attacks today.

Stress is one of the most common forms of anxiety. Stress and other related problems are present in nearly every person alive in varying degrees. There are actually several different kinds of stress, some of which are more dangerous than others. It is important to keep stress under control with proper stress management so that it does not take over an otherwise healthy life.

There are many different types of stress and similar disorders. Some forms of stress are not as serious, but some can cause health risks. Too much stress can lead to other issues, such as cardiovascular and digestive problems, eating disorders and sleep disorders. Large amounts of stress cause a person to constantly think about the pressure that they are under, which in turn never allows them to relax. This eventually becomes harmful to the body, as it is in a constant state of agitation. Stress is something that affects nearly everyone at some time or another and there are many causes, such as worries about jobs, finances, family and other things. When left untreated, stress can build to such a point that it has a adverse influence on entire families. The most important thing to remember about stress is that it is necessary to deal with it every day so that it does not build into a monster of an issue.

If a stress problem is suspected, then be sure to contact a health professional for an expert diagnosis.

Stress and related disorders can sometimes be the trigger to much more serious health issues. Stress management can help avoid these issues, but not everyone knows how to do this. Sometimes doctors will give out antidepressants to persons under a great deal of stress. Since this is something that strikes everyone, treatment is very important. Health professionals are the best resource for advice and guidance.

Stress is usually accompanied by anger which can be a recipe for disaster if you can’t figure out how to cope. Holding stress in just enhances the problem. Eventually you get to the point that you explode and usher forth a stream if angry words at your spouse, your children, a co-worker or a friend that you really don’t mean.

So how does one put a lid on the stress demons and cope in a manner which doesn’t erupt in a volcano of anger? Here are a few suggestions:

Get out and run. Preferably by yourself. This is actually my personal favorite in terms of stress relief. There is nothing better than getting outside on the trails by myself and enjoying a serene country jog. By the time the jog is over my muscles are all loose and my head is clear enabling me to get on with my day.

Just Breath. If exercise isn’t an option, it helps to just close your eyes and breath deep for a while. Focus on something you love while you breath- your garden, your new baby- whatever get your head out of the madness and back in the norm. After a couple minutes of breathing you will feel like a whole new person.

Write what you’re thinking. Rather than expressing the building anger in a vocal manner, just write it down! If the stress is coming from a break up, write an angry letter to burn or throw away later. Writing is a great way of expressing yourself without hurting anyone’s feelings.

All in all there are several methods of stress management. The above examples may, or may not, work for you, so it’s a matter of testing different techniques before you find the right one for you.

by Avery Henderson

Research in psychoneuroimmunology (the study of the interaction of behavioral, neural, and endocrine factors and the functioning of the immune system) reveals that stress and the resultant way we think can have positive or negative effects on our immune system. Laughter results in breaking the stress cycle, positive effects on the immune system, and helps in the development and maintenance of a positive attitude. There are many stressors currently facing employees during this time of depressed economy. Relieving stress is a key to keeping employee performance and productivity at a premium!

Recent research is showing that most diseases are stress related. Absenteeism, insurance premiums, accidents (on and off the job), interpersonal conflicts and violence are connected to physical and mental diseases and are affecting the bottom line. Businesses that support and encourage appropriate positive humor in the workplace are finding that it can actually be good for business.

Positive humor is fostered by a positive attitude, positive creativity and constructive actions. All of these are keys for dealing with new business challenges, as well as the associated change and stress. With supportive research, I assert that

People who are humorous are more playful

People who are more playful are more creative

People who are more creative find more solutions

People who find more solutions can better deal with everyday challenges, change, and the associated stress.

Tips for Using Positive Humor in the Workplace

By all means tell jokes and humorous stories. However, recognize that they are about 5% of all possible techniques to evoke mirth and subsequent laughter. I encourage you to be creative with the many other ways to be humorous.

Listen to great joke tellers, learn their jokes and pass them on as you see fit. More importantly, put on your creativity hat to improve such jokes and to make up your own jokes. Many great jokes come from real life situations and the creative license of the person telling them.

Tell humorous stories. Tell these one-on-one, in small co-worker groups, or during a presentation just for fun or to introduce a concept or principle. The greatest reservoir for humor is your life, especially your childhood. Take the time to sit down, close your eyes, and reflect on fun things in your life from early childhood, through elementary school, middle school, high school, secondary and post-graduate education. Then, go through all your jobs, military service, church events and activities, community events. Think about fun things you and your friends did. Now, write them down by title or outline. By taking things from your life, you will connect with your audience as do the best humorists.

Emphasize the importance of “positive” humor. Most comedians are into “negative” humor, i.e., putting down people. Most jokes, but not all, are put-downs and that’s why some people avoid telling them. Some of us tend to use put-downs with our friends to show that we care about one another, to laugh at ourselves and to bond. I’m okay with that. Some of us use put-downs to intentionally hurt others. I’m not okay with this.

If there is no malice in your heart, there will be no malice in your jokes or your creativity.

By using creativity, one can change a socially unacceptable joke to one that is appreciated, remembered and used by others. Changing offensive words and using self-deprecation to change are the keys. Making up funny sounding nonsense words to substitute for offensive words is a fun challenge. Once you learn how, you get better and better.

Making fun of yourself is an age-old humor strategy that works extremely well! People love other people who can laugh at themselves rather than trying to hurt someone else. A little sarcasm is okay. However, if it is the only meal you serve, people will stop coming to your table! Positive humor and positive attitude go hand in hand. Here’s some advice: Keep employees with negative humor, negative attitudes and foul mouths away from the frontline or else you will lose customers!

Have a training session on “positive” humor in the workplace. Identify “positive” and negative” humor. Talk about the application of positive humor and positive attitude to customer service. Distinguish the difference between taking risks to be humorous and “rampant silliness” that will turn off customers (internal and external). Emphasize that we all have different senses of humor and that you will never be able to please everyone. However, it is important to be assertive and set boundaries with people who insist on telling certain kinds of jokes that are offensive (sexual harassment, racism, and the over- the- top derogatory words and phrases). Encourage constructive feedback from co-workers so employees who use offensive language will understand. Discuss the appropriate times and places for the humorous activities suggested in this article because they differ from organization to organization.

Use ice breaker and energizer games for group settings. Make them invitational (some people just don’t want to participate). One of my favorite ice breakers involves getting people to share humorous stories about themselves with one another. For a quick and fun energizer with a group, I lead aerobic patting. Starting with my hands, arms, head and neck, then down to the front of my thighs, my shins, my calves, the back of my thighs, ending at my “booty.” In both of these cases, people are laughing and no one has told a joke. Like I always say, you don’t have to tell a joke to get people to laugh. There are books written on ice breakers and energizers, so all you need to do is a little research, as well as use your creativity. Make up your own with items like balloons, balls, marbles, rubber chickens, stuffed animals, candy bars, fruit, marshmallows, etc., etc.

On breaks or during celebrations, play nonsense, cooperative and low competition games for fun. Emphasize that it doesn’t matter who wins the game; it’s for fun! The more mistakes that are made, the more fun it is. These games are true tests of whether or not people are able to lighten up! Play nonsense, cooperative and low competition games for fun. Emphasize that it doesn’t matter who wins the game; it’s for fun! The more mistakes that are made, the more fun it is. These games are true tests of whether or not people are able to lighten up! A great nonsense game I love to play alone, as well as with others, is Bop-It. It’s a game that can be played on short or long work breaks. Caution: It’s addictive! You can purchase various sizes of Bop-It at your local toy store.

Use fun props. Having a prop box in the workplace is a good idea. Funny glasses are always great props. You have a choice of Grouch/Beagle Puss glasses, huge sunglasses, thick bottle glasses, zany shaped and colored glasses, and glasses with funny shaped eyes. Turn your back to a person or group, slip on the glasses, turn around and make a funny comment. You’ll get a laugh or a groan (a groaner is better than nothing) every time. I like to use props to communicate an important observation about co-workers behaviors. For example, if one of your co-workers who you consider is a friend is acting like a jerk, walk over to that person’s desk while they are there and sit a stuffed Eyore (the donkey in Winnie the Pooh books) in an auspicious place. Say nothing, just give the person a big smile and walk away. Since stuffed Eyores come in different sizes, having at least two will give you an opportunity to show whether you thing the person is being a big or a little jerk. Other things like a huge aspirin you can get at a magic/clown stores can tell someone that they are being a pain. A heart balloon can tell someone that they have touched your heart with their act of kindness. Smile always helps to keep the messages in a fun context.

Noisemakers and humorous musical instruments really get attention. I love the sliding flutes, train whistles, zinger whistles, kazoos and nose flutes. People can’t stop laughing when I play a “nose” flute for them. Even better is when I try to teach them to play. It has something to do with images, I think! When I give new nose flutes out to attendees in my programs, someone always ask if they have been recycled. It always gets a laugh.

Practical jokes can be a lot of fun! There are practical jokes you can buy, e.g., the “whoopee” cushion, the hand buzzer, exploding golf balls, etc., but the best ones are those you think up on your own spontaneously. Be carefulhave fun but avoid scaring people into heart attacks. And remember, what goes around, comes around. Be willing to accept what comes back to you and laugh about it.

Use string figures and balloon sculptures are great props to help you teach points in a fun way, to help a coworker get out of the dumps (make their favorite balloon animal), and to decorate in fun ways for celebrations. Both are easy to learn. You can find books on string figures at bookstores. Appropriate balloons, balloon pumps and books on balloon sculpting can be found in magic stores and toy stores.

Celebrate successes and achievements (small and big) and recognize coworkers with fun gifts and cards, as well as personalized gifts. Recognition is something everyone wants. Whether it’s job success, personal achievement, birthday, holiday, other special occasions, or “just because I’m thinking of you,” we all like the special attention given to us. Whether it’s giving humorous cards, gag gifts, crazy candy, goofy flowers, funny skits or birthday roasts, coworkers will appreciate one another and enjoy their jobs better when they are celebrated and recognized. Important Note: It’s okay to buy things for people, but making something for them will be appreciated more and be more memorable. Why? We show our love/how much we care when we take time to personalize gifts.

Create a “Fun” Bulletin Board. This is a place for sharing cartoons, email jokes, poems, short stories, photographs, quotes, humorous newsletters, etc. It’s a good place to post notices of local fun activities, such as performances by humorists, plays, festivals, concerts, and other activities that will help employees have joy in their lives.

Share humorous audio tapes and watch humorous videotapes. On work breaks, coworkers can share humorous audio tapes (purchased or self-recorded) or watch humorous videotapes. The old time radio bloopers are my favorite. Taping radio programs, like Prairie Home Companion, Car Talk, etc., is a good way to store humor for a later time when a humor boost is needed. Remember the scout motto: Be Prepared!

Use humor in training. Let me say it loudlyTRAINING DOES NOT HAVE TO BE BOOOOOOORING!!! Lectures and reading off of PowerPoint slides is the best way to bore your audience. When employees are bored or fall asleep during training, they fail to get the messages. Research in adult training shows that individuals learn best when they are entertained, involved in experiential activities and get some laughs. Human Resources can use some humorous videotapes for training. John Cleese and other humorists have some great training videotapes available. Having in-house trainers, and other presenters in the organization, take train-the-trainer courses on “edu-tainment should help in their presentations. Additionally, hiring speakers and trainers, who are known for their “edu-tainment” abilities, for special presentations can be a good way to show staff appreciation.

Reading is usually thought of as an individual activity; however, reading humorous short stories or poems out loud to others is another possibility. After reading some humorous material, one can share it during work breaks, during training, before or after work. Sharing humorous reading resources might peak the interest of others enough for them to start reading similar things. Who knows when it will help someone who is always in a bad mood?

Sharing cartoons by clipping them out of the newspaper, photocopying (sometimes modifying) and posting on a bulletin board, or just giving them to someone personally, can help coworkers get a laugh. Cartoon books are great gifts, not only for others but also for yourself. I have given myself all the collections of “The Far Side, “Calvin and Hobbes,” “For Better or Worse” and “Herman.” With CRS (Can’t Remember Stuff), I get to read them again every year and laugh just as much as the first time.

With many people having e-mail now, sending and receiving humorous material is much easier. (Yes, yes, yes, let’s not overdo it! Eliminating it altogether prevents some much needed stress relief.) I keep a humor buddy list and exchange materials on a daily basis. When I get notes back from someone saying that a particular piece helped her or him to cope, I know it’s a good thing to do. Share humorous email newsletters. Maybe sending them to one’s home email address is more appropriate, depending upon an organization’s policy.

Learn new skills or renew old skills to share with coworkers in humorous ways. Here are some suggestions unmentioned heretofore: magic; buffoonery juggling; mouth sounds and cartoon animal voices (e.g., Mickey Mouse

A vacation would be one of the best stress relievers. But, not one that you are forced to go on or take. Rather, one that you would find relaxing and interesting enough to get your mind off the same old-same old. Not everybody can do what they want or go where they want. So, let me give you some tips on hos to find stress relief.

Don’t try to eliminate all your stress at once, you didn’t acquire it all at once. Make gradual changes over time. Your habits will start to change and you will see stress relief throught the new strategies you pick up.

Stress can be relieved in a number of different ways.

One method of relieving stress is with puzzles. They literally force your mind to change it’s focus and move from what is causing you stress. Puzzles are available in all sizes and for all ages.

Gardening is an excellent source of stress relief. Or getting out in the woods for a walk or cutting and stacking firewood can be a healthy means of releasing pent up nervous energy and stress.

Nature offers beautiful things for us to see everyday, but most of the time we are too busy to even notice. Nature is an excellent way to relieve stress. There are several scenes and facets of nature that are highly relaxing, from the sound of a running brook to the crashing of the waves on the rocks to a quiet walk in the woods.

How hard would it be for you to add one simple pleasure to your daily routine?

Try a hobby. It does not have to be expensive. it can be as simple as replanting a 99 cent cacti into a nicer pot and watching it shoot up. They grow fast and are easy to grow. But, you should find something that can take your mind off the stress and find some relief.

You’ve heard about herbs and that they might bring stress relief, but you may have hesitated. Natural stress supplements are available. Natural cures are great alternatives to prescription drugs. In addition to being safer than prescription medication; natural stress relief can be just as effective if not more so.

Music can alleviate a lot of stress. It can calm the children, providing you don’t overdose them with sugar and you are the person repsponsible for the selection of the music! Try singing or dancing with the kids, or your spouse for that matter.

Try picking up an instrument on ebay. Get something easy that you can play around with and have some relaxing fun. I ended up getting a bunch of odd and unusual noise makers for fun but also a nice Native American flute that even I can make sound good.

The Bible indicates that we can make melody in our hearts. You can also speak blessings to yourself. The body reacts differently when it hears you speak a blessing to yourself over someone else speaking to you. If you need tips, pick up a CD and repeat them to your self while driving or working around the house.

Exercise can heal your mind as it shapes your body. One good method for stress relief is breathing deeply and exercise can get you doing just that. Go ahead and release all the tension and frustration and feel better when you are done.

Knowing the best you can be can be accomplished through some exercise. give yourself a boost of self confidence.

Give yourself a break with some laughter. Really, laughter is the best medicine. it will get you to stop focusing on what ails you and allow you to release tension and anxiety.

You’ve heard the expression, take only photos and leave only footprints? Get out and take some shots-with a camera. Experiment with close-ups of people and flowers and insects. It can be an amazing form of relaxation and stress release. Who knows, maybe you have a hidden talent never discovered.

Whatever you choose as your preferred stress relief tip, remind yourself that taking the time to find your mental wellness on a busy day is one of the better things you can do for your overall wellness and well-being.

Stress just seems to be part of our lives like eating and breathing. There are more demands placed on us over shorter time periods than perhaps ever in the history of mankind. In the days of old, stress was usually from physical danger. If you were a pioneer for example, then the seeing of indians would definitely cause stress as the pioneer surely feared physical harm. This type of stress is called the flight or fight reaction. However, in modern times most of our stress is mental and not physical. Yet our bodies have the same reaction to mental stress as they do to physical stress.

When we come under stress our bodies prepare us for action in the following ways: Adrenaline is released to boost the energy and strength of the body. This increases our heart rate and breathing. Our major organs will direct their efforts to only those that immediately serve supporting physical action. This adrenaline rush causes us to feel tension and perhaps nervous as we anticipate taking some type of action. There is a great release of chemicals and a redirection of bodily activity to support our reaction to stress.

You know when you have a big meeting, you have a nervous reaction which is similar to the fight or flight reaction. Part of your stress management is to redirect this nervous energy into helping you perform better in the meeting. This takes discipline and training. Many top athletes are able to channel this nervous energy into higher levels of performance. But again with athletic performance there is a physical release of this built up energy.

When we are under stress, our bodies are primed for taking physical action. When we take physical action, then we are releasing out the increased energy out our bodies physically. If we do not have a physical outlet, one excellent method is massage therapy. Massage therapy helps loosen up muscle tension, it releases toxins trapped in our muscle tissue and it helps us to mentally relax. Some massage treatments also can reverse the tension in the major organs via the trigger points in our hands and feet.

Massage chair recliners have many effective massage therapies with proven beneficial effects. Massage chairs come equipped with Shiatsu massage, Swedish massage, Deep Tissue and many others. Each of these massage treatments target specific areas and have different benefits. In general, they all help induce relaxation and help to ease aches and pains. Massage helps to remove toxins from the body and enhances circulation of the blood and lymph. Both the blood and lymph clean the body of toxins and other potentially harmful substances.

Stress comes from our environment and is subject to our interpretation and built up set of reactions. These cannot be eliminated entirely. Massage therapy is an essential tool in our stress management toolbox. Massage chairs are one of the most convenient and effective ways to receive massage therapy. These recliners have full body capabilities and have many additional features beyond massage. Many have stretching, music therapy and heat. These additional features compliment the massage and help to induce total body relaxation.

If you are feeling stressed, then just imaging taking a quick 20 minute power massage. Relieve the build up of stress and anxiety. Release the tension in your neck, back and shoulders. Give your mind a chance to be free from the tunneling affects of a stressful situation. This can be a powerful stress management tool in the comfort and convenience of home to better manage your stress. Life becomes much more manageable with your own massage chair recliner.

by Dave Turo-Shields, LCSW, CEC

A phone counseling session is just like a sit-down counseling session. You set an appointment, and at that time, your therapist calls you on the phone and give expert counseling advice for 50-60 minutes. The difference is that you don’t meet face-to-face.

Phone Counseling And Confidentiality

Phone counseling is incredibly private. Now, having said that, I must add that normally the biggest chance for breach of privacy during a phone counseling session is if someone at home or at the office picks up the line while the session is in progress. Many choose to use their cell phones, thereby eliminating immediate interruption. But I have to remind folks that if their spouse looks over the cell records they may ask about what that call was about. Yes, many spouses don’t want even their spouse to be aware they’ve reached out for help for one issue or another.

Comparing Live Counseling Sessions With Phone Counseling

Even though my therapy team was an early pioneer of online and phone counseling, starting in 1998, I will still tell you that nothing beats a live session. There is so much that is communicated in the moment that is not spoken and in phone counseling you miss out on these powerful non-verbal cues. However, having said that, the type of person who seeks out phone counseling have said in surveys, that they would have never sought therapy if they hadn’t had the option of phone counseling. In fact, over 95% of those surveyed who had sought out this service say they wouldn’t hesitate to do it again.

Most all of us have a need to please other people. A client sitting in a session should be focused on their needs, not the therapists needs. However, would you think a client still wants the therapist to like them in a live session? Phone counseling has taught me that there is a lot more of that going in in live sessions than we might like to admit. I came to that conclusion years ago as I noticed how direct phone clients can be. If they feel I’m heading down the wrong path, they’re quick to tell me. Other times, they share pertinent information that they may have held back for a number of sessions, maybe because they would have felt embarrassed sharing it live.

So what’s the outcome? I have found in phone sessions that we “get down to it” much quicker. Clients feel more empowered to stop you in mid-sentence and tell you straight-away if your approach doesn’t seem to be a fit for them. This is immensely helpful as it makes the therapist adjust to exactly what the client needs. This all makes for a much more efficient session and a happier client outcome.

Phone Therapy Fits Busy Schedules

In a fast-paced world phone therapy is incredibly flexible and you can fit it to YOUR schedule. Most times you have to work around a therapists schedule. I’ve counseled people while they walk, before they head off to work, during lunch time, while on a commute train to work, or in the car as they drive to or from work.

We all live in a busy world with busy lives. This is one way practitioners can adapt to people’s lives. Clients are very grateful for it. Other clients suffer so severely from issues such as agoraphobia that they cannot leave the house. We’ve counseled and prepared people to leave the house while on a cell phone and work directly with their anxiety right in the moment. Now that’s meeting a client exactly where they are at.

What Is The Cost Of Phone Counseling?

You may have already put this together from the previous paragraphs. How much would you estimate it might cost you to take time off work? Get child care? How much is it worth to you to travel to and from appointments? Live sessions across the US range anywhere from $65-$140 per hour. When adding in the items I mentioned above you can add another 15-20%. Using phone therapy can cost you 15-20% less than a scheduled sit-down appointment.

Isn’t Phone Counseling A Cold Way To Receive Help?

We know that the literature shows that all therapies have about the same level of success. What makes the difference is the alliance between therapist and client. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how powerful the connection can be, even in the very firt session of phone therapy. I’ve been counseling by phone for 10 years now. I don’t do things that don’t work! I like to see my clients making progress and happy in their lives. Phone counseling definitely answers the call, so to speak.

Will Your Insurance Pay For Phone Counseling?

Always call your insurance carrier and ask. I wouldn’t have recommended that until the past two years. Many insurance companies are beginning to see the benefits of online counseling and phone counseling.

My practice has had two EAP contracts in the last two years specifically to deliver counseling services through email and by phone. Most likely your insurance carrier will say no, but let them know when you call that it’s a service you’d like to see them cover in the future.

Phone Counseling Wrap Up

This service is not for every client. Clients who are suicidal or feeling scared they may hurt someone else needs to call 911 or the national help line at 211. If you’re in this type of crisis you need local care immediately.

Phone counseling is a smashing success. And don’t just take my word for it. Google “phone counseling research” and you will see that this approach is wildly successful and popular. The truth is that you, the consumer, are driving the need for phone counseling services. Every year the statistics go up. More people are searching for this service every month. Our job in the counseling profession is to meet you exactly where you’re at and offer the high quality services we offer right in our offices.

The rate of anxiety in the United States is growing in a fierce way. Many first reach out to their doctors for help. This is good and bad. What do most doctors do? They prescribe medications. There is a time and place for anxiety medications, but it should never be the first course of anxiety treatment.

There are several forms of anxiety disorders. Some include Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Social Anxiety, Phobias, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and a few more. As you can see, there are many types of anxiety. The first, most important step is accurate diagnosis. Once you’re helping professional is clear on exactly what type of anxiety disorder you have, that’s half the battle right there.

While learning the proper anxiety treatments, you to be brave. Anxiety is powerful and I know you want to have it be gone yesterday, but effective techniques can take a while to begin to work for you.

One of the oldest tricks in the book involves breathing into a paper bag. We’ve all heard about this or seen it on TV. It’s interestingly successful. Now-a-days we know more about ‘why’ its successful in treating anxiety. The regulation of the breath is tied directly to your nervous system. Breath normally and you simply send the signal to your nervous system that you’re safe.

Coping with anxiety is a huge strain. Knowing what kind of anxiety you have, and trying various anxiety treatment techniques is important. You will recover. We’ve helped hundreds reclaim a vibrant and happy life. Life’s simply a different color without chronic anxiety.

Let me inspire you! Life without disabling anxiety is available to your through proper anxiety treatments. Your entire perspective can change once you begin coping with anxiety. A lady I work with has reduced her anxiety nearly 90%. She is enjoying life much more. In her own words… “When I was constantly struggling the world appeared to me in black and white. Now that I’m feeling better, I see the world in vibrant colors. I had no idea really how much of my life anxiety had taken until I began to live without it.”

So, in the meantime, here’s what I want you to do. Get online or pick up the phone book and begin looking for just the right professional for you. Anxiety treatments have come a long ways in the past twenty years. It’s time to take your anxiety stress by the horns, but not by yourself. You do not have to be alone in this struggle any longer. Together, as a team, you can overcome anxiety.

12 Step Program success blow away high cost treatment programs. W In just my city, Indianapolis, Indiana, there are over 300 different 12 Step meetings every week. The Promises, which are a part of the original AA Big Book actually come true for those willing to put in action the steps. What’s their secret?

Alcoholics Anonymous is where it all began back in the 1930s. Two men by the name of Bill and Bob came together in their suffering and pieced together a protocol they were able to follow for addiction recovery success.

The early beginnings of the AA 12 step program had it’s roots in Christianity. That’s right. Most individuals involved in these addiction recovery groups today don’t know this simple truth. And it may be for the better. In fact, each of the 12 steps can be traced to specific Bible passages.

Through the two originators, Bill and Bob, one of them had an association with a group known as the Oxford Group. This group emphasized a special sequence of steps leading to personal happiness and freedom. The steps were closely linked to surrendering to God; completing personal inventories; identifying character flaws, making amend to those they had harmed and carrying their story to others who needed it.

Today most refer to their 12 step experience as spiritual, not religious. This has great appeal and skirts around peoples resistance to religious rituals.

The success of the 12 steps speak itself. Today, all over the world, you can find programs focused on codependency, gambling, sex addiction, spending, overeating and many more than I could list here. This program is free to attend. Is confidential and it’s worked for hundreds of thousands to recover from thier addictions.

Learning to manage stress is vital to leading a healthy happy life. You are as unique as your body’s reaction to stress, everyone is different. Stress is how the body responds to outside situations and problems. Sometimes these situations become out of control and your body responds by developing health problems or by lashing out emotionally. It is trying to make you stop the stress. You might develop high blood pressure, ulcers, or have a heart attack. Sometimes the response is different, you might be angry, aggressive or overly sensitive. Only by learning to control both the stress trigger and your response to it, will you be able to have complete stress management skills.

A trigger can be anything. I can be something immediate like preparing for a date, making a speech, or the threat of physical danger. These situations happen and are over quickly. The stress will allow you to deal with these things immediately and then your body will return to its normal state. Long term stressors are different. A long term stressor can be things like divorce, having a baby, work or moving to a new location. These stresses can wear on the body and also cause serious health concerns.

Dealing with the triggers is important for managing stress. You need to pin point what is causing stress and figure out how to eliminate it or at least many it more tolerable. Most people know what the trigger is, but others have trouble identifying them. Hypnosis can assist you in discovering the trigger and help you learn how to deal with it. It is one of the most effective ways of dealing with stress as it deals not only with the trigger but your response to the trigger.

Your body responds to too much stress through a variety of different ways. Stress can be the cause of low work performance, sleep deprivation, or other addictions such as alcoholism, drugs and smoking. Your body might respond through skin breakouts, grinding your teeth, a panic attack or a low immune system. I am sure you do not want to have any of these problems. Most people want to lead a happy and peaceful life free of stress.

Hypnosis can help you avoid chronic problems caused by stress. It will allow you to control your breathing and become deeply relaxed. You will learn to manage your stress in a healthy manor. It will help you face your stressors and triggers head on instead of bottling them up. Others may choose other ways of dealing with stress, such as medication, counseling or exercise but they are not dealing directly with the trigger and response. Hypnosis will address all of these things, it will even help you in other areas of your life that might cause you more stress such as weight loss, self confidence and fears.

There is always be stress in our lives, it is something we can not avoid. Many new discoveries and theories are being made each day regarding stress management and treatment. The choice is yours. Only you can decide what is best for you and your lifestyle. Remember you are in control of your body and it’s reaction. The time has come for you to make a choice.

Now is the only time that is important. Many people get caught up in their day to day lives and focus on the future which can bring about anxiety or stress. Stress can cause many problems such as concentration issues, lack of good judgment, negativity and lack of productivity. The best way to combat these feelings of stress is through relaxation. Relaxation plays in a key roll in leading a healthy happy life. Relaxation takes as little as ten minutes a day and can be as simple as breathing exercises, or as challenging as a kick boxing class, the choice is yours.

Relaxation can happen anywhere, at work, at home or on a little deserted island off the coast of Mexico. Unfortunately not everyone can take a nice vacation to that dream island or a seven year sabbatical. Many need to learn to relax in the comfort of their own homes and lives. The key is to find something you enjoy and teach your mind to relax when you do it.

Finding your method of relaxation might be more difficult for some than others, but it is easy, just think about what you enjoy most. Maybe you like surfing the web, reading, meditating or walking. Any of these activities can be a relaxation method and can be scaled down to ten minutes.

Watching TV, listening to music, surfing the web and reading all offer a break from regular day to day situations. They each create an alternative world that is entirely your own. Your mind visually escapes into a place that is different and exciting instead of dull, boring and always the same as so many of us think our lives are.

Meditation can help you learn to reflect on situations and to control your breathing to calm your mind. These techniques need to be learned and practiced in order to achieve the maximum result. Once mastered, you can relax at the drop of a hat and find inner control in as little as ten minutes.

Other people prefer to hit the gym to relax. Some like to run, walk or lift weights. Others might prefer a cycling, kick boxing or tai chi class. Running and walking burn off excessive built up energy, however not everyone wants to run a marathon. For them there are other sorts of classes which sole purpose is relaxation such as yoga. Many people choose to skip the classes and gym all together and simply walk their dogs in the park.

Practice makes perfect and remember patience is a virtue. Listen to your body and practice until your body knows what relaxation feels like. Make note of what did not work for your mind and body, remember it for the future. Be patient, if you don’t get it right away, it will happen eventually so keep up the good work. But make sure to keep yourself motivated by reminding yourself you will be healthier and happier in the end and think how nice it is to do something you like!

Make sure you try different techniques, sometimes one might work better than another and it is best to have a variety. Learning something new is always a challenge however once you get the hang of it, it is like riding a bike, your body won’t forget how. You must make a conscious effort to remind and train your body to relax while performing this task. It may take time, but in the end the rewards will be worth it.

by Kim Archer

With stressful working environments and hectic schedules, many people struggle with the negative impact of their busy work lives. Those who have difficulty managing their personal and work lives in balance with each other are increasingly turning to yoga. Yoga gives them peace of mind so that they can achieve a perfect work-life balance.

The mind-body connection is piquing interest in this ancient practice, and research shows that it can indeed reduce blood pressure and stress, improve your work performance, and even make you age more slowly.

Although the focus on yoga may be different depending on the environment, its basic premise is to relax the body while keeping the mind focused and alert. For example, when you do yoga, you focus on body movement, breath, sound or even an object. When your mind wanders, as it inevitably will, you bring your attention back and start again.

The ancient practice of yoga garnered renewed interest in the 1960s, when those interested in consciousness began to follow its practices. However, after this, yoga began to fall out of favor. It may have been because yoga is not quite like other types of exercise. For one, you need patience in order to get its full benefits. It offers steady but slow results. This is in direct contrast to the almost frenetic activity and quick results of aerobics.

Many people rush to work out every day during their lunch hours, force themselves to keep up a brisk pace, and then rush back to work. Of course, it’s probably physically beneficial, but it still adds pressure to an already overwhelmed life. Yoga, by contrast, offers a less competitive and stressful way to work out, while supporting and even causing an overall feeling of simply “being.”

One of the major reasons yoga is making a comeback is because it can be so healing as an activity. The over-the-top push for fitness generated by the traditional exercise regimes of aerobics, running, or weight lifting also has caused injuries, including neck pain, back pain, or strained knees. Because we are such a competitive society, these activities have also inspired books, tapes and videos touting this or that as the latest and greatest thing.

Today, even health practitioners are getting in on yoga practice, with chiropractors, neurologists and orthopedic surgeons sometimes referring patients to specific yogis during treatment.

In fact, it’s moving to the mainstream increasingly. Mainstream hospitals and businesses are now having yoga techniques taught, while books about these techniques are bestsellers, with discussion groups on the Internet springing up to talk about this “new” innovation as well.

Surprisingly, perhaps, even the Army has gotten in on the act. It has asked the National Academy of Sciences to study New Age techniques such as meditation to see if soldiers’ performance can be enhanced in this way.

In addition, yoga has become a pursuit for some runners, weight trainers or aerobic dancers who don’t find peace in their exercise regimes and want the de-stressing aspects of yoga to be part of their workouts.

Approximately 60 to 90% of doctors’ visits in the U.S. are related to stress. Mind-body approaches offer cost-effective and safe treatments for this ailment that don’t involve drugs or surgery. Among people who use these techniques, 34% of patients who are infertile get pregnant within six months, while 70% of those who have trouble sleeping or even have medically defined insomnia become regular sleepers. In addition, the numbers of those suffering from pain and making regular doctor visits because of it go down by 36%.

Gayle Gregory, leadership coach and co-author of The Grand Experiment: An Expedition of Self-Discovery, believes the source of innovation begins in a place of fearlessness. It is a place of not trying to force things to happen and not worrying

Recognizing when you actually have fears is the real problem because most people don’t recognize why they act the way they do. Even when they do, they don’t know how or don’t want to deal with those fears. Gayle’s methods are all about unleashing your inner creativity by first getting rid of fear.

Realize your true potential with these strategies:

1. Be prepared to observe your fears.

Fear is natural. Everyone fears things: Not being good enough, having enough, knowing enough, capable enough, etc. Don’t be overwhelmed! Just take the time to study which ones are directing your life and keeping a lid on what should be your effortless innovation.

2. Connect with your fears.

After acknowledging your fears, bring them out in the open and analyze them. Really get to know them. They are like step-children and merely require your interest and curiosity. When you face them and stop avoiding them, you’ll find they begin to dissolve. Fear is only powerful when hide from it.

3. Tap into your potential.

You’ll be able to find that place of creativity more and more as the layers of fear begin to dissolve, since fears are what keep you from reaching that place of clarity, the spring of innovation and flow. A fearless warrior is one who is so committed to reaching that place that fear can’t hold them back. Inspiration doesn’t have to be rare. You should feel inspiration everyday.

Putting these techniques into practice will better able you to tap into your source of creativity.

It is now a common thing to feel stressed every now and then with the busy lives that we have. Stress can cause lots of problems such as diarrhea, headaches or gastric related illnesses, if we let stress build up without doing anything to relax again.

Music therapy has been proven to rid a patient of any health or stress related issues they may be experiencing. Music is used to heal many emotional, physical, and mental problems that people have.

Music therapy is a therapy which is creative based. It helps to stimulate your mind and body, yet at the same it also helps you to relax. This causes a soothing feeling over your body which helps to reach your therapy objectives.

The best way to allow your fears to slide away, is through the use of music. Music has a soothing effect, which will help you reach your goals in time. Just relax during your sessions and watch yourself progress steadily.

Lyrics are another major component of any therapy session. The more positive the lyrics are, if there are any at all, the more positive your outlook on life will be. Listening to music will help you succeed.

Did you know that our brains make a connection with the sounds in music? This is why music can be so effective when it comes to healing. It works on people who are not open to regular treatment.

Let your emotions rule your therapy sessions. If you feel relaxed with a particular style of music, continue on with that style of music. If you feel agitated, then it would be best to seek another style of music.

Make a mental note of your nerves and feelings during the times you listen to music in therapy. Do you feel at ease or do you feel tense? If you feel tense, you should tell your therapist this. If you feel at ease, you should also mention it to your therapist.

You can try relaxing yourself at home. If you listen to music at home, why not put on some relaxing music instead of the usual party goer music? Try your own therapy sessions and see how you feel. Lay very still on your bed or on the floor for 15 minutes, while listening to soft mellow music, then take note of your nerves.

Music therapy is also used along with any medical treatment that you are receiving to reduce one’s stress level. This can help a lot in healing your body.

They say there’s more than one way to skin a cat. The same goes when you start tearing your hair out with all the frustration, grief, anxiety, and yes, stress. It’s a state of mental conditioning that is like taking that bitter pill down your throat, causing you to lose your sense of self, and worse your sanity. Just thinking about it can drive anyone off the edge.

And they say that the proactive ones are already living off the edge.

As one stressed-out person to another, I know how it feels, and believe me there are many variants when it comes to stress. Coping with life, and carrying the problems that may or may not belong to you can scratch away the little joy and happiness that you can carry once you head out that door. You can’t blame them for being like that; they have their own reasons, so much like we have our reasons to allow stress to weigh us down. They say that stress is all in the mind, well, what’s bugging you anyway?

There are several ways to manage stress, and eventually remove it out of your life one of these days. So I’ll try to divide it into a seven-day course for you and I promise it’s not going to be too taxing on the body, as well as on the mind.

1. Acknowledge stress is good Make stress your friend! Based on the body’s natural “fight or flight” response, that burst of energy will enhance your performance at the right moment. I’ve yet to see a top sportsman totally relaxed before a big competition. Use stress wisely to push yourself that little bit harder when it counts most.

2. Avoid stress sneezers Stressed people sneeze stress germs indiscriminately and before you know it, you are infected too!

Protect yourself by recognizing stress in others and limiting your contact with them. Or if you’ve got the inclination, play stress doctor and teach them how to better manage themselves.

Protect yourself by recognizing stress in others and limiting your contact with them. Or if you’ve got the inclination, play stress doctor and teach them how to better manage themselves.

4. Practice socially acceptable heavy breathing This is something I’ve learned from a gym instructor: You can trick your body into relaxing by using heavy breathing. Breathe in slowly for a count of 7 then breathe out for a count of 11. Repeat the 7-11 breathing until your heart rate slows down, your sweaty palms dry off and things start to feel more normal.

5. Give stressy thoughts the red light It is possible to tangle yourself up in a stress knot all by yourself. “If this happens, then that might happen and then we’re all up the creek!” Most of these things never happen, so why waste all that energy worrying needlessly?

Give stress thought-trains the red light and stop them in their tracks. Okay so it might go wrong – how likely is that, and what can you do to prevent it?

6. Know your trigger points and hot spots Presentations, interviews, meetings, giving difficult feedback, tight deadlines. My heart rate is cranking up just writing these down!

Make your own list of stress trigger points or hot spots. Be specific. Is it only presentations to a certain audience that get you worked up? Does one project cause more stress than another? Did you drink too much coffee?

Knowing what causes you stress is powerful information, as you can take action to make it less stressful. Do you need to learn some new skills? Do you need extra resources? Do you need to switch to decaf?

7. Burn the candle at one end Lack of sleep, poor diet and no exercise wreaks havoc on our body and mind. Kind of obvious, but worth mentioning as it’s often ignored as a stress management technique. Listen to your mother and don’t burn the candle at both ends!

So having stress can be a total drag, but that should not hinder us to find the inner peace of mind that we have wanted for a long time. In any case, one could always go to the Bahamas and bask under the summer sun.
